Paul Stephen is a Jim’s Mowing Franchisee in Victoria. He has been running a successful mowing business for 19 years.  He runs a couple of trailer units and has built a very large client base.

Paul is very, very satisfied with the way his business has grown and continues to perform.

Before joining the Jim’s Franchise business, Paul looked at other Franchise based Businesses, and decided the Jim’s Mowing because a friend had great results with Jim’s too.

Previously Paul had to deal with redundancy when working for corporates, and was finally ready to be his own boss, but with the support of a franchise business.

He admits he didn’t know the difference between a rose and a camellia when he first started, but considered it all part of the development required for this new business direction.

Ironically, winter can be a busier and more profitable time for his business.  Mowing is the initial foot in the door, but he finds there are many additional services that most of his clients subscribe to so that they become “all care” customers, with Paul providing mowing, weeding, hedging, pruning, fertilizing and more.

Paul still gets enormous satisfaction from his work and his client’s appreciation of the services he provides.

Paul recommends condensing your customer base significantly to concentrate clients geographically in one small area, thereby reducing the amount of “dead” travel time. This also creates a ripple effect whereby people nearby approach you to do their lawns too, as they see the standard of your client’s lawns it the immediate area (across the road, next door neighbours, etc).  This has resulted in Paul gaining as many as 6-8 customers in a single court area.

Even in the off season, work is busy and it pays very, very well.  But the enduring factor is to delivery quality service, every time. That’s what as sustained and grown his business.  He takes pride in making every lawn look it’s absolute best, no matter the standard of the house.
