When the fun and the excitement of the festive season starts to fade, it’s time to turn your attention to the garden. The post-holiday period offers a perfect opportunity to assess and revitalise your outdoor space so it’s ready for the new year. This gardening checklist will guide you through essential tasks to ensure your garden remains healthy and ready for the upcoming growing season.
Checklist for post holiday gardening
Not sure where to start with your garden after the holidays? Follow our easy checklist below so your garden is healthy and thriving!
Remove Festive Decorations
It’s always less fun removing the holiday decorations, but once the festive season is over remove any decorations from your garden and outdoor entertaining area. This includes lights, wreaths, ornaments, signs, and inflatables. By removing the decorations properly, you can pack them away so they won’t be damaged by rain, snow or wind damage and don’t add any additional stress to your garden or plants.
Apply Mulch
In the summer heat, your plants will be losing more moisture in the soil than usual. Mulching your plants will help to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and provide insulation. A fresh layer of mulch can also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your garden and can hide any unsightly things. Depending on your location and climate, your garden might need supplemental watering during the winter months. Ensure the soil is adequately moist, but not waterlogged by watering deeply for longer.
Inspect Garden Beds
Keep an eye on your garden beds for any signs of pests or diseases and remove any affected leaves or plants to prevent the spread of issues. Also, examine the raised beds and flower borders for compacted soil. If the soil becomes too compacted, your plants won’t be able to access the nutrients, sunlight and water they need to survive. Loosen the soil with a fork or tiller to improve aeration and drainage.
Fertilise Your Plants
If your plants are needing an extra boost, you can add some fertiliser to help them grow stronger! First, we recommend conducting a soil test to determine nutrient levels. This will inform you about what type of fertiliser your soil needs. Based on the results, apply a balanced fertiliser to replenish essential nutrients.
