Lawn mowing techniques

What are lawn mowing techniques?

Lawn mowing techniques usually involve creating special patterns in your lawn to cut the grass more efficiently and leave an attractive appearance. By varying your technique, you will ensure that your lawn isn’t worn down by the same tire tracks and prevent grass compaction which can affect its growing and overall health.

You don’t need any specialised equipment to do lawn mowing techniques, you can use your lawn mower and brushcutter. Just ensure that the blades are sharp enough to get those clean lines that the professionals do.

What are the types of lawn mowing techniques and patterns

There are as many lawn mowing patterns as you can imagine! You can follow the standard patterns of stripes, checkerboards, criss-crosses, and diamonds. The fancy patterns can sound complicated, however they follow the basic principles of creating a simple striped pattern. Straight lines are best otherwise you may run the risk of your lawn looking a little messy and crazy.

How to do lawn mowing techniques

The first step to doing lawn mowing techniques is ensuring that you are mowing in the right conditions. This means mowing at an appropriate time and ensuring your lawn isn’t wet so as not to cause any damage.

Next, begin with the edges of the lawn. Cutting the outside edges of the lawn will give you some much needed room to turn and manoeuvre the mower. Following this, you are now ready to begin your first line.

Use a landmark to make your first stripe. It can be a garden bed, footpath, driveway or anything straight to help guide you. After you mow your first stripe, you can use that as a guide for your next. Line your wheels up with the edge of the first stripe then mow your next line following it.

If your line ends up crooked, simply mow over it again in the same direction to straighten it. Continue mowing your lines until you’ve mowed the entire lawn, and go over the edges again to perfect the pattern.

After you’ve gained some confidence in your simple striping pattern, feel free to get creative with your designs. Remove any clumps of grass clippings to further ensure the lawn is left looking immaculate!
