Weed
In spring, you might notice a surge of weeds popping up. Weeds can appear anywhere there’s a bit of space, meaning they could start showing in empty garden beds or even around tiles and concrete. When physically removing weeds, be sure to pull the whole plant out, including the roots. Another alternative to physically removing weeds is to spray them with weed killer. You can purchase weed killer from your local nursery, or create a more-natural version at home. Some people find that a solution of washing up liquid, salt, and vinegar can be effective in killing weeds, and there are many such recipes online.
Remove winter protection
If you have put up structures or applied mulch to help keep plants warm and insulated during the winter, spring can be a good time to remove them in preparation for the hot summer months to come. The Australian summer sun has a reputation for being particularly warm, so be sure plants don’t get too overheated.
Keep your lawn trimmed
While the winter weather tends to make lawns grow slower, the growth speed often picks up in the spring. If you’re noticing your lawn is getting a little long, get out there and get it under control before it gets too long! We have many articles on how to cut your lawn.
Get planting
Spring is arguably the best season to begin planting. Whether you’re looking to plant some gorgeous annuals, hardy perennials, or delicious veggies, spring is a great season to get started! If you’re new to gardening, consider a single, small, easy-to-manage garden bed, or a selection of pots for your balcony. Some plants that can be great for beginner gardeners include tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, sunflowers, marigolds, and pansies.
Prune existing plants
If you have plants that need pruning, spring is a great time to do so. Cut back dead leaves and flowerheads, but be sure not to cut off new growth. However, if a plant is about to flower, it can be best to wait until it’s finished its bloom to begin pruning. This pruning also applies to trees. Cut trees back before they have a chance to get out of control in the spring and summer. Fertilise
Bring the fertiliser out and give your garden and lawn a good feed. Spring is a great time of the year to fertilise your yard. Apply a slow-release fertiliser that allows your plants to receive nutrients for the months ahead. There are different fertilisers made for different types of plants, so be sure to choose one that is suited to your garden.
Trim garden bed edges
If you’re noticing that your lawn is starting to invade your garden beds, trim it back. This will help to keep your garden looking neat and tidy, and will also help keep your garden plants from competing with grass. If grass roots have made their way into your garden beds, remove them. Taking proactive steps now should mean you have less to do during the hot summer months.
Wipe down outdoor furniture and living spaces
While you’re out spring cleaning the garden, why not also clean up the outdoor living space? Hose or wipe down outdoor furniture, give any cushion covers a good wash, and sweep the patio of any dirt or leaves that may have accumulated there. Railings and sills can also be gently cleaned of any debris or dirt. When life gets busy, it can be easy to neglect the outdoor living space in favour of keeping things indoors together. A simple clean can help to make your outdoor space inviting again. If you like, you can rearrange the setting a little bit and maybe even purchase a few new decorative accessories for a fresh new look without buying new furniture!
So, there you have it, a few tips on how to spring clean your garden. Remember, you don’t need to do all of these tasks at once if you don’t have the time. Instead, spread them out over a series of weeks or months. Just do a bit at a time, in easily manageable amounts. With a little persistence and dedication, you should be able to get your garden cleaned up by the end of the season.
