Best Grass for Dogs

,

If you have a dog, chances are you’ll need a lawn that can stand up to some wear and tear (particularly if you have an energetic pooch!). As such, if you’re looking to lay some new turf, it’s probably best to consider those that have a high tolerance for wear. This is also good for if you have children who love to run about on the lawn or wish to host outdoor barbeques with lots of foot traffic.

The urine of your pooch can also cause damage to lawns. This is because dog urine contains a lot of nitrogen. While a little bit of nitrogen is actually good for a lawn, too much of it can burn the grass, leaving brown or yellow patches across the turf.

Below, we take a look at some examples of the best lawn for dogs. Read on to find out more about some of them!

Kikuyu Grass

Kikuyu grass is a fast-growing turf that can be great for yards with dogs. This quick growth means that the grass can repair quickly, making it excellent for tolerating wear from the family dog. However, this quick growth means it’s best to keep an eye on Kikuyu grass when it’s placed near any areas where you don’t wish grass to grow (such as garden beds). Kikuyu is also tolerant against droughts and has a fine leaf that feels very soft underfoot. One thing Kikuyu can’t handle very well, though, is shade. This grass is best-suited for gardens that get plenty of sunshine.

Couch Grass

Another grass that can be great for homes with dogs is Couch grass. This grass is ideal for areas that experience high levels of wear, which could be good news if your pup loves to do zoomies! Couch grass loves the sunshine, making it great for Aussie yards, and it can also handle periods of drought if needed. While it is great at handling the sun and heat, much like Kikuyu, this grass isn’t so good with shade, so for best results, you’ll need to plant it in a yard that gets plenty of sunlight. It can also be quite an aggressive grower (like many wear-resistant kinds of grass), and as such, needs to be monitored to ensure it doesn’t grow where it’s not wanted.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia is a dense-growing grass that is well-suited for yards with dogs. It is tolerant of lawn traffic, while still being a pretty slow grower. Its slow-growing nature means it isn’t aggressive and is less likely to overtake grassless areas than some other types of lawn. This slow growth pattern also means that Zoysia needs less mowing. Zoysia can handle shady areas, so if you’ve got a yard with a dog and shade, this could be a good option! However, as it is a slower-growing lawn, you may see more signs of your dog being present. One way to reduce this is to teach your pup to pee and dig in just the one area of the yard.

Above are some of the best grasses for dogs. When looking for a lawn suitable for your pooch, it’s good to focus on types of grass that are tolerant against wear and tear. We hope this article has been helpful, and that you and your pooch will enjoy your lawn for years to come!
